New sources of artemisinin for treating malaria.

"Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs), are recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the most effective treatments currently available for malaria. Artemisinin is extracted from the plant Artemisia annua, yet its production is expensive and the quality is variable. There is concern that there will be an inadequate global supply of artemisinin required for ACT production, as efforts to eradicate malaria are increased. It is forecast that demand for ACTs will double to at least 200 million doses per year over the next 4 years, and could grow to over 300 million doses annually."
